C hapter 11 POLYMERIZATION
3M checkMARC Free control of your polymerization lamps with checkMARC ® Reliable light polymerization is an essential prerequisite for successful, direct adhesive restorations. To ensure optimal performance of polymerization lamps, 3M offers a free check of ALL polymerization lamps, regardless of manufacturer.
Polymerization is an imminent discipline that must be executed accurately when longevity of composite fillings is at stake. Insufficient polymerization leads to more fractures, more wear, more marginal leakage and more discoloration. All physical parameters of the fillings are directly dependent on polymerization. For example, every additional millimeter of distance between the light guide and the filling surface means a significant loss of intensity. At a distance of one centimeter, it is almost impossible to polymerize a composite sufficiently.

When processing dental composites, it is very important to realize that certain situations can cause many problems in polymerization. A polymer’s hardening process is always done by binding molecules that then take up a smaller volume than the original volume. Resins must be polymerized in order to realize their features. The more the composite material is polymerized, the better characteristics it gets, but at the same time, shrinkage and shrinkage stress are created. Shrinkage and shrinkage stress cannot be completely avoided in the dental composite polymerization process, but one should be aware of it.
There are many factors that can change good polymerization, and therefore also the end result of dental restorations. One factor is the time spent; it varies depending on the color of the composite, the power of the lamp, the depth of the cavity, the thickness of the layer, the intermediate tooth structures, and the amount of filling material itself.
Ivoclar Bluephase Meter II Light meter with digital display. Enables exact and unlimited verification of light intensity in mW/cm². Suitable for all LED lamps with a wavelength of 380–550 nm
B.A. International Optima Light Meter Digital radiometer gives an accurate measurement of light intensity in mW/cm2. Is suitable for measuring light guides in diameter of 8–10 mm. Series intensity: 0–2050 mW/cm 2 .
Dark shades require longer polymerization time, approximately 60 seconds at a maximum depth of 0.5 mm.
The layer thickness of the resins is very important. For universal composites, it is recommended to polymerize layers up to 2 mm thick.
